Name: Sailor Davis
Alias: of US Navy
Hometown: Newark, New Jersey, USA
Birthplace: Virginia, USA
Pro Boxer: Record

According to the June 17, 1911 Newark Evening Star [1], Sailor Davis (first name unknown) had fought some 75 bouts thus far, with 18 KOs. (The article then went on to list all his battles to that date.)

He had been born 23 years earlier in Virginia, and had come to Newark around 1908 when he started his pro boxing career. (Earlier, in 1906, he had won the United States navy welter title before turning pro.)

By May 1911 he had moved to Tichenor Place in Newark, where he had fitted up a gym for himself and Buddy Faulkes--a fellow African-American boxer. [2]

Davis was stationed aboard the USS Hancock docked in the Brooklyn Naval Yard. [3] Davis commuted back and forth daily from Brooklyn to Newark to box. See also: [4]
