Sailor Liston beat Harry Dudley by PTS in round 6 of 6

  • Date: 1923-09-18
  • Location: Electric Park, Hoquiam, Washington, USA
  • This bout "kept the spectators on their toes during five of the six rounds. Without doubt Liston and Dudley put up the hardest battle ever witnessed in a Harbor ring and the one unfortunate feature was that it was not witnessed by a packed house.

"Although he is a black boy, Young Dudley proved himself possessed of a big fighting heart and his gameness won him many admirers. Following a second round in which he and Liston stood toe to toe and hammered away with rights and lefts, Dudley in the third went down from a hard right smash to the jaw and was sent through the ropes. He was shoved back by a spectator and it took him eight seconds to regain his feet. He managed to weather the storm. The fourth round was another exciting session, in which the California negro fought tigerishly. The fifth was slambang from bell to bell, while in the sixth, Dudley was weakening from severe jolts to the head and body. Liston was entitled to the decision awarded him by Charlie Hartnett, the clever Tacoma referee, who officiated in all of the events.
