  • Per the April 29, 1927 DNS, Mullen had started boxing in 1924 while in the Navy aboard the USS Tennessee. By April 1927, reportedly he had fought some 70-plus bouts, and lost only six (one vs. Jackie Fields). He had been the 1925 Battle Fleet Bantamweight Champion, after defeating Sailor Danny Toomey in the semi-finals at Lahaina Roads, and Sailor Joe Fernandez in the finals at Pearl Harbor.
