Pro Boxer: Record
Died of a brain hemorrhage following a 10th round TKO loss to Kazuyoshi Niki in Fukuoka, Japan. He left the ring in a daze and later fainted in the dressing room. He was rushed to a local hospital but died three hours later.
Sakai's death prompted a crackdown on foreign promoters by the Japanese Boxing Commission. There were concerns over Sakai's actual record and possibly being mismatched against a more veteran fighter like Niki. Sakai's record was reported to be 11-6 (5 KO's). The Commission enacted a change which would require foreign boxers to provide certified fight records from the recognized commission in the country the fighter comes from, medical examination results and other documents.
