Sammy Mandell vs. Jackie Fields (2nd meeting)
Jackie Fields 140 lbs lost to Sammy Mandell 138 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10
- Date: 1928-02-23
- Location: Coliseum, Chicago, Illinois, USA
- Referee: Eddie Purdy
"Fighting himself into condition to defend the lightweight championship, Sammy Mandell has evened the score with Jackie Fields, California junior welterweight, by a decisive victory. Fields won a newspaper decision over Sammy last May in Los Angeles; Mandell turned the tables before a packed Chicago Coliseum last night. For two rounds Sammy took considerable body bombardment. Then Mandell began to get the range, and his long lunging left soon had Field's left eye closed. Repeated shots to the eye kept Fields mostly on the defensive, and the last half of the battle saw considerable infighting and clinching. There was not a mark on the lightweight king at the end of the 10 rounds when referee Ed Purdy raised Mandell's hand as the winner." -Associated Press
