• This was Mazzinghi's first fight since December 2nd, when he successfully defended his world jr. middleweight title against Ralph Dupas. In that bout Mazzinghi sustained an injury to a cheekbone that required surgery afterwards. While recuperating Mazzinghi was involved in an auto accident in February that re-injured his cheekbone, but more significantly, killed his wife of 10 days who was also in the vehicle.
