  • Date: 1963-12-02
  • Location: Sydney Stadium, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
  • Referee: Vic Patrick

"World junior middleweight champion Sandro Mazzinghi of Italy, floored Ralph Dupas of New Orleans three times in the 13th round Monday night to earn a TKO over the man from whom he won the title last September. The 7,150 fans at the Sydney stadium saw Dupas dazzle Mazzinghi with brilliant footwork and boxing in the first three rounds. After Dupas had piled up an early lead on points, Mazzinghi began to catch Dupas in the 4th but fought from the 6th round on with a deep cut under his left eye. Dupas, 150 1/4, who was barely saved by the bell in the 11th round, entered the 13th weary and sluggish. In the first minute of the round, Mazzinghi, 153, tagged the challenger with a right to the head, and Dupas went down for a three count. A few seconds later, the champ smashed Dupas with another right and the American was back up on unsteady legs after a seven count. Mazzinghi dropped him for the third time with a right cross at which point referee Vic Patrick stopped the fight at 1:10 of the 13th round." -United Press International

  • The UPI report stated that referee Vic Patrick - the sole official - had Mazzinghi leading by a score of 57-53 after 12 rounds. However, the Canberra Times reported that Patrick had him leading by a score of 55-52 at the point of stoppage.
