According to the November 3, 1968 edition of the McKinney (Texas) Courier-Gazette, Sandy Esquivel, "an outstanding orthopedic surgeon in Austin," was one of seven former University of Texas athletes who were scheduled to enshrined in the Longhorn Hall of Honor. At the University of Texas, Esquivel starred in track=and-field, cross country and basketball. In addition, he "distinguished himself as a boxer, both amateur and pro." In 1926, he set a two-mile record in the Southwest Conference which was stood until 1949. As a sophomore, he played on the 1924 unbeaten University of Texas basketball team.
