Saturnino Gonzalez moved to Northern France at the age of 12 in search of a job. Lying about his age, he ended up working in a glass factory and at the age of 16 also took up boxing. As an amateur he fought out of Arques. In 1938 he turned professional in Lyon under the guidance of Luigi Quadrini and reportedly scored a win over Paul Morellon there. He returned to Spain in 1939 when World War II broke out. He would go on to become the president of the boxing federation of Burgos in 1959.
