Tanaka died April 15, 2005, of injuries sustained in his 10th round knockout loss to Nobuo Nashiro, on April 3, 2005 in Osaka, Japan. Tanaka was defending his Japanese Super Flyweight Title, that he won the previous November, with a decision over Masayuki Arinaga.

In another notable bout in 2002, Tanaka was stopped in the 8th round in Honolulu, by former WBC Super Flyweight Champion Gerry Penalosa, in a bid for Penalosa's WBC International Super Flyweight Title.
