Severo Balboa was frequently called "Steve". He was also nicknamed "Kid" (various newspapers). He was a track star at Corpus Christi W.B. Ray High School. On 2 Feb 1963 he won the Regional Gold Gloves Open Division Lightweight Championship in Corpus Christi against David Avalos.
