In the late 1980s, Shawn Evans was the stable-mate of world middleweight and light-heavywieght champion Darrin Van Horn. Evans signed a fighting contract with Butch Lewis and Joe Frazier in 1996. Soon after this signing he sustained a career-ending back injury.

Evans is the grand newphew of United States Congressman Torbert H. Macdonald. Macdonald was the Harvard room-mate of John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United States.
