The 8-round semi-final between Lou Barbetta and Charley Bayrun was called off because of rain. Before this bout, 50 million radios throughout the United States were tuned in to hear President Franklin Roosevelt give a 45-minute "national emergency" speech. This semi-final bout was postponed so that the boxing audience could hear the speech over the loudspeakers.
