Antillon KOs Martinez!
By Francisco Salazar; FightNews October 24, 2004 [2]
Junior Lightweight Urbano Antillon gave his hometown lots to cheer about when he knocked
out tough Juan Carlos Martinez in the sixth round of an eight round bout in front of a sold out 1,200 at
the Maywood Activity Center in Maywood, CA. The bout headlined a six-bout "Champions of Tomorrow" card presented by KO Productions in
association with Seventh Promotions. Martinez was no pushover, yet he had to deal with Antillon and the partisan crowd that came to
support their man. From the beginning of the bout, Martinez pressured Antillon, making him fight in close and at
times, not allowing him to extend his arms as he wanted to. Although Martinez pressured, Antillon would land to the head of Martinez. As the bout progressed,
Antillon would begin to work the body consistently. During the fourth round, it looked as though Antillon would have him out, but Martinez showed resiliency of withstanding all of those punches. Martinez would surprise Antillon by landing a hard overhand right or left hook to the body, but
would get outworked by his opponent. Antillon would finish each round strong, scoring more consistently to the head and t the body with left hooks and right uppercuts. In the sixth, Antillon caught Martinez with a combination that had him retreating backwards toward the ropes. Antillon followed up, landing a series of punches onto Martinez. Just when it looked as though Martinez could go, referee Raul Caiz stopped the bout at 1:36 of the sixth round. Afterwards, Antillon described feeling no pressure fighting in front of his hometown crowd. "I was able to stay patient throughout the fight," responded Antillon, when asked about fighting in a building where he had spent some time as an amateur. "He was a tough fighter. My corner and I knew you could not take him out with head shots. So, we were finally able to put combinations to the body where he slowed down. Antillon, from Maywood, CA, improves to 14-0, 9 KO's. Martinez, from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, drops to 13-26-1, 2 KO's. In the special female bout, Mia Rosales St. John was triumphant again as he defeated Janae Archuleta in a four round Super Lightweight bout. Archuleta would come towards St. John, but the former Playboy magazine centerfold countered effectively against the slow-footed Archuleta. St. John found a home for a straight right hand, swelling underneath the right eye of Archuleta. The tough Archuleta would not give up, continuing to go forward and occasionally landing a right cross against St. John. However, St. John showed improving ring generalship underneath the training of former world champion Roberto Garcia. St. John stepped up the aggressiveness against Archuleta, looking as though she wanted to knock out her opponent. However, Archuleta hung on until the end. All three judges scored the bout 40-36 in favor of St. John. Fightnews.com scored the bout the same. "I like Janae a lot," said St. John, in an assembly room at the venue, after having gone through the large crowd after the fight. "She is no pushover. She comes to fight and doesn't quit." Asked about the sudden aggression in the fourth round, St. John admitted, "I got mad because she wasn't going down from my punches that were landing. That is why I got really aggressive." St. John, from Calabasas, CA, improves to 36-5-2, 13 KO's. Archuleta, from Denver, CO, drops to 4-9-1, 2 KO's.
Flyweight Francisco Arce won a close majority decision over Jose German Cruz over six rounds of
non-stop action.
Arce knew he was in a tough war when Cruz repeatedly came at him, letting go of his punches
almost immediately after the bout began. Cruz landed vicious body shots to Arce, looking to pull off
the upset.
Arce came back to take control of the fight in the second and third rounds. Arce was able to match
Cruz' intensity by landing punches of his own. After both fighters went at each other in the third,
Arce looked to have the upper hand as they went into the latter half of the fight.
Cruz came back in the fourth, fighting in spurts effectively by catching Arce along the ropes with right
hands to the chin and left hooks to the body.
At the beginning of each round, both fighters went at it aggressively, water and perspiration coming
off of each body as if they were sprinkler systems.
In the sixth round, after Cruz had controlled the first minute, Arce looked like he hurt Cruz with a
combination of punches. Cruz came back in the sixth and finished the round strong.
One judge scored the bout 57-57, while the other judges scored the bout 58-56. Fightnews.com
scored the bout 57-57.
Arce, from Los Angeles by way of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico, improves to 14-1, 4 KO's. Cruz,
from Ocotlan, Jalisco, Mexico, has no official record.

Lightweight Alfonso Figueroa scored a dramatic one-punch knockout over Jesus Macias in the fourth round of a scheduled four round fight. The awkward Macias would come at Figueroa and swing wildly as the more polished Figueroa would attempt to find openings for him to land. Figueroa would come forward, often getting tangled or held up by Macias. At ties both fouled at each other as Macias wailed away onto his opponent if he came towards him. The brawling style of Macias would work in his favor in the third round, after being outboxed by Figueroa in the first two rounds. Both traded hard shots in the fourth, as both fighters did not give in to their opponents. Both continued to brawl until Figueroa was able to time a straight right hand flush to the chin of Macias, dropping Macias onto his back on the canvas. Referee Vince Delgado immediately stopped the bout at 2:50 of the round as Macias looked visibly shaken but eventually disappointed that the bout was stopped. Figueroa, from Los Angeles by way of Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico, improves to 3-1, 2 KO's. Macias, from Carson, CA, drops to 2-1. In other bouts: - Jorge Garcia won his professional debut over Keith Richardson in a four round Cruiserweight bout. Richardson, from East Los Angeles, drops to 1-5-1. - In an even fight, Odi Rivera won after the third round when his opponent, Jonathan Bobadilla, was unable to continue due to huge swelling underneath his left eye in a scheduled four round Junior Lightweight bout. Rivera now improves to 1-3-1, as Bobadilla drops to 1-1. Notes: - Faces in the crowd: former world champion Bobby Chacon, Light Heavyweight contender Julio Gonzalez, Heavyweight Javier Mora, and Lightweight Edwin Valero.
- Cruz was listed as 18-0, with 14 knockouts on a California athletic commission bout sheet.
However, KO Productions promoter Ray Alcorta told Fightnews that Cruz' record is 8-4, 5 KO's. Fightfax has no listing of him.
- Next card for KO Productions and Seventh Promotions is tentatively scheduled for mid-December. The 'Champions of Tomorrow' card has been one of the best cards both promotions have promoted. Ray Alcorta KO Productions and Sergio Diaz of Seventh Promotions and their respective staffs put together a top-notch card. - Ring announcer was Jim Fitzgerald.
