Easy points win for Venter

South African Roedolf Venter scored an easy eight-rounds points win over Argentina's Eduardo
Rojas at Carnival City near Brakpan on Thursday night.
Venter (71,85 kg), normally a junior middleweight, faced his first international opponent after
accepting the fight against Rojas (74,84 kg), who weighed in as a super middleweight.
His shrewd trainer, Harold Volbrecht, knew it was a calculated risk when he saw the flabby body of
the 27-year-old Rojas at the weigh-in, and realised the visitor was not in fighting trim.
The shorter Rojas, 7-9-6 (3), who has been inactive since September last year, seemed to have come
only for a pay-day. It was evident from the tyre around his waist that he planned only to survive the
eight rounds in what became a glorified sparring session.
Venter, 8-0 (3), boxed from behind his left jab and soon reddened the face of the visitor who was
unable top get past his opponent's long reach.
From round five Rojas began to tire and resorted to holding and leaning on his opponent. He was
lucky not to have a point deducted by referee Jaap van Niewenhuizen, who handled the rough tactics
of the visitor well.
In round six Venter dropped Rojas with a straight right to the jaw, but he managed to beat the count
and mauled his way to the final bell.
Judges Joe Horn, Len Hunt and Wally Snowball all scored the fight 80-71.
