Guerrero's title hopes put on hold by Diaz

Judge Marty Sammon scored it 114-113 for Diaz. Ed Kugler saw it 115-112 for Guerrero. Marshall Walker scored it 115-112 for Diaz. "I thought I edged it out, but the judges thought different," Guerrero said. Guerrero appeared to catch a break in the 12th when referee Dan Stell took a point away from Diaz for a blow to the back of the head. But Diaz had already done enough to win over Sammon and Walker.

Diaz held his own with a spirited effort down the stretch to secure his points victory - despite having a point deducted late in the final round by referee Dan Stell for hitting behind the head. After twelve hard fought rounds, Diaz was awarded the biggest victory of his career. Judges Marshall Walker and Marty Sammon scored the fight for the new champion from Mexico City, Mexico, by the scores of 115-112 and 114-114 while Ed Kugler scored the fight for Guerrero, 115-112.

Diaz had a deducted a point for hitting behind the head in the 12th round but he still had enough of a cushion to nail down the win on two out of the three cards. Judge Marty Sammon scored the bout 114-113, for Diaz. However, Judge Ed Kugler tallied 115-112, for Guerrero. Judge Marshall Walker casting the deciding ballot and he had the contest 115-112, for the upset winner Diaz
