ESPN Friday Night Fights

In the opener, Lightning Lonnie Smith of Las Vegas made quick work of Jose Gomez, knocking him out at 2:40 of the first round. Lonnie dominated from the start putting Jose down early in the round in what looked like a slip but Gomes gloves touched the mat and Referee Kenny Bayless counted it as a knock down. Smith continued to wail away until late in the round he landed a sweet left to Gomez body that had him crumble to the mat in pain. Referee Bayless began the count but waived it off giving Smith the TKO.

Next up was a Jr. Lightweight bout between Las Vegans Frankie Martinez in his pro debut and Jesus Gutierrez 1-0. This fight was all Gutierrez from the opening bell as he was all over Martinez like gravy on mashed potatoes throughout the first. A game Martinez was staggered once in the second and again in the fourth but managed to hold on and keep his feet. After four rounds Judge Jerry Roth had it 40-36, while Judges Al Lefkowitz and Duane Ford saw it 40-35, all for Gutierrez. Lvboxing.com also scored 40-36.

The first televised match was a Junior Middleweight bout between Alberto Herrera 7-0-1, 5 KOs of Lake Elsinore, CA and former Olympian Demetrius Andrade 11-0, 8 KO’s of Providence, RI. After a slow start, Andrade landed a nice left that rocked Herrera mid round and followed up with a nice right-left combination to set the tone for the rest of the fight. Andrade put on a dominant performance with an obvious reach advantage that he used with great skill from the outside and powerful lefts that etched the face and body of Herrera. To his credit Herrera took everything that Andrade could throw and kept his feet for eight rounds. Referee Tim Cheatham saw it 79-73 while Judges Robert Hoyle and Jerry Roth saw it 80-72, all for Demetrius Andrade who remains undefeated at 12-0. lvboxing.com also saw it 80-72.

The Main Event was a Jr. Welterweight bout for the WBC Continental Americas and the North American Jr. Welterweight Titles featuring Mauricio Herrera 15-1-0, 7 KOs of California and Ruslan Provodnikov 17-0-0, 11 KOs of Russia.

Herrera got off to a good start with faster hands and more accurate punches while the tough Russian smiled every time he got tagged and swung wildly. Prodnikov was warned twice in the first for hitting behind the head. Provodnikovs power caught up in the third and raised a huge welt under Herreras right eye nearly closing it. Herrera started strong in the fourth but faded as the eye looked no worse. Herrera used his superior hand speed in the fifth to keep the Russian at bay while Prodnikov took aim at the welt growing under Herreras eye. For the next several rounds it was close with Herrera coming out in spurts of speed and Prodnikov landing the bigger shots In the eleventh Herrera had a vicious flurry late in the round that caused a big welt under Prodnikovs right eye. Both finished swinging hard in the twelvth and both of them had faces that looked like hamburger. On press row it was widely thought that Prodnikov had won handily but when the scores came out Adelaide Byrd saw it 115-113, and Judges Dick Houck and Duane Ford saw it 116-112, all for Mauricio Herrera who wins the belts. Lvboxing.com had it 116-112 for Prodnikov.

After the crowd cleared from the ring after the main event, Juan Tepoz 4-4-1 of Santa Rosa, CA met Ricardo Contreras 3-0, 2 KOs of Los Angeles in a Jr. Featherweight match. Contreras made quick work of the overmatched Tepoz battering him about the ring with both hands until he took a knee on the ropes. Tepoz was unable to rise before Referee Joe Cortez reached the count of ten giving Contrears a KO at 47 secongds into the first round.

Next up were undefeated Jr. Welterweights Oscar Andrade 3-0, 1 KO of LA and Deth’Marcus Hall 2-0 of Las Vegas. Andrade dominated Hall for four rounds, beating him more handily each round. All three Judges gave all four rounds to Andrade for a unanimous decision.

In the walk off bout former UNLV star Henry Namauu 8-3-2, 5 KOs took on Manuel Otero 2-1, 1 KO of Albuquerque, NM in a Cruiserweight match. For six rounds it was a show of contrasting styles where Namauu was the boxer and Otero was the brawler. After six rounds the boxer prevailed by scores of 59-55 and 58-56 twice, to win the match. Henry Namauu wins a decision with a nice demonstration of boxing skills.
