Herrera dominates Huerta[2]

Thompson Boxing Promotions returned to the Inland Empire at the Doubletree Hotel in Ontario, California 
for its Path to Glory series. Lake Elsinore’s Mauricio “El Maestro” Herrera took on Miguel Angel Huerta
of Mexico City in the eight round junior welterweight main event. Herrera was dominant as he outworked
Huerta in going the distance. The bout started as Huerta came forward Herrera worked the jab. Huerta
chased in round two as Herrera continued to jab away. In round three Herrera began picking his spots
fighting more aggressive as he backed Huerta to the ropes with combinations but the Mexican responded
with big punches. Huerta continued his aggression in round four as Herrera jabbed away.
In round five Herrera was busier picking with the jab following with flurries but Huerta kept coming
after him. Continuing to box well behind the jab “El Maestro” schooled Huerta as he was having in his 
way with him through six rounds but Huerta was tough continuing to press the action. Herrera began to 
land the right hand effectively in round seven as Huerta was blinded by the jab most of the fight. The 
eighth and final round Herrera closed it out as he outworked the fading Huerta. In the end Herrera out 
boxed the veteran as the judges scored the bout 80-72, 79-73, and 78-74 as Mauricio Herrera wins a 
unanimous decision. With the win Mauricio Herrera improves to 20-3, 7KOs, Miguel Angel Huerta was tough
and came to fight as he falls to 27-11-1, 18KOs. 

In the co-main event, junior welterweight prospect San Diego’s Giovanni Santillan squared off against 
Angel Martinez of Sonora, Mexico. Trading on the inside a counter right by Santillan dropped Martinez
early in the opening round. Santillan pressed forward in the second round landing counters as Martinez
boxed from a distance circling the ring. The southpaw Santillan shot the straight left landing it flush
in round three, backing Martinez to the ropes numerous times.The San Diego fighter landed a right in
round four as Martinez hit the canvas for a second time, Martinez quickly got up but Santillan dropped
Martinez nearly sending him through the ropes. The Mexican fighter wasn’t finished however Santillan
continued his assault as referee David Denkin stops the contest at 1:16 of the fourth round. Giovanni
Santillan remains unbeaten as a prospect as he goes to 10-0, 5KOs. Angel Martinez goes to 13-5-1, 9KOs.
Other Bouts
Tijuana’s Antonio Arrellano and Joaquin “Chico” Chavez battled it out in a six round junior welterweight
bout. Arellano came out boxing in round one to start things off as Chavez punched away aggressively as
he appeared to have a cut above his left eye. Chavez was busier in the second round as he began to box
behind the jab as he backed up Arrellano, later in the round Chavez connected with a huge left hook
momentarily rocking Arellano. In round three the two continued to box as Arellano used his distance
using the jab while Chavez let his hands loose moving in and out connecting on the inside. The fourth
round saw the two fighters began to pick up the pace as Arellano continued to box and jab, Chavez landed
the power shots. Working behind the jab in round five Arellano continued to stick on the outside Chavez
continued to stop the Tijuana fighter’s momentum with the power shots on the inside. The sixth and final
round saw Chavez swinging for the fences landing huge punches as Arellano popped the jab avoiding the
aggressive Chavez. “Chico” Chavez was aggressive throughout the fight as two judges scored the fight
58-56 and one scored a draw 57-57 as Joaquin Chavez wins a majority decision. Joaquin Chavez improves
his record to 6-10-2, 2KOs as Anthony Arellano falls to 6-2-1, 2KOs.
Super bantamweights Jorge Ruiz of San Diego and Francisco Camacho of Mexico went the distance in a
scheduled four rounder. The two started off testing the jab moments into the fight the action picked up
as Ruiz shot the right hand while Camacho smothered working on the inside. Camacho attacked the body in
round two as Ruiz boxed away on the aggressive Camacho continuing to smother. The third round saw the two
mix it up on the inside as they traded to the body, later in the round Ramirez suffered a cut above his
left eye but continued to stay on the inside. The fourth and final round Camacho continued his aggression
pressing forward as Ramirez boxed and countered. The Mexican fighter clearly outworked Ramirez as the
judges scored it 40-36, 40-36, and 39-37. Francisico Camacho wins a unanimous decision improving to 2-3,
1KO. Jorge Ruiz suffers his first loss and goes to 3-1, 1KOs.
Welterweights Nico Macias and Francisco Ramirez traded punches from the start as they made their pro
debuts. The two began to exchange punches as the tall southpaw Macias used the distance Ramirez fought on
the inside. Macias stood on the inside with Ramirez chopping him down landing short hooks as the two
continued to trade in round two. The southpaw Macias boxed away keeping his distance in round three as
the straight left connected effectively as Ramirez appeared to be wearing down. A straight left by Macias
rocked Ramirez in the fourth and final round as Macias kept punching away, Ramirez fought on to the final
bell giving the fans what they want. All three judges scored the bout 40-36 as Nico Macias wins a 
unanimous decision. Nico Macias wins his professional debut and now stands at 1-0, Francisco Ramirez
fought hard as he goes to 0-1.
Lightweights Cesar Villarraga of Columbia and Chino’s Sopaun Rin made their pro debuts. The two fighters
came out banging away from the opening bell later in the round an overhand right dropped Villarraga but
quickly got up taking a standing eight count. In the opening seconds of round two Villarraga returned the 
favor as a straight right dropped Rin but he quickly got up, Villarraga continued to hit away backing Rin
to the ropes. The Columbian boxed away in round three measuring with the jab following through with power
shots. The fourth and final round a flush left hook to chin by Villarraga floored Rin for a second time
as the referee immediately stop the fight 9 seconds into the round. Cesar Villarraga wins his professional
debut as he goes to 1-0, 1KO. Sopaun Rin goes to 0-1.
In the opening bout Unbeaten prospect Jonathan Garcia scored a second round knockout over Christopher
Rivera in a scheduled six round junior welterweight bout. A powerful left hook to the head knocked Rivera
out cold as referee Thomas Taylor reached a ten count 37 seconds of round two. Jonathan Garcia stays
unbeaten as his record now stands at 12-0, 10KOs. Christopher Garcia goes to 5-14-1, 4KOs.
In attendance and at ringside was super bantamweight Efrain Esquivias meeting greeting who is coming off
a spectacular stoppage over former world champion Rafael Marquez. Also on hand were former world champions
“School Boy” Bobby Chacon, Rodolfo “El Gato” Gonzalez, and Israel “Magnifico” Vasquez. Thompson Boxing
returns to the Doubletree Hotel Friday October 18 as San Diego’s Christopher Martin takes on Enrique
Quevedo of Riverside in the main event.
