This was the inaugural boxing program of the newly-formed Manhattan Athletic Club. [5]

It was a benefit show, with the proceeds to go to Mrs. C. C. Riley, whose policeman husband had been murdered. It purported to be comprised of amateurs, although some of the boxers were from out-of-state and all already apparently had pro bouts. (Prizefighting was illegal, so only "boxing contests" for entertainment purposes were permitted. See: supposed distinction at this time between "prizefighting" and "boxing contests." [6])

Bird Leg Collins sparred three rounds with his trainer Kid Ross as part of the entertainment.
