Alberto Torres Takes on Anthony Smith on September 27 in Sacramento By Lucas Ketelle; ThaBoxingVoice.com September 3, 2014 4:54 pm[1] Exciting featherweight prospect Alberto Torres (4-0-2 1KO) of Sacramento, CA will return atop a stacked September 27th card in Rancho Cordova, CA when he takes on Anthony “Lights Out” Smith (1-2 1KO). For Torres, this will be his fourth bout in the Sacramento area, where he is currently undefeated, with his last appearance on October 12, 2013 resulting in a knockout win over Percy Peterson of Stockton, CA. Torres is a faced paced action fighter who recently went down to Oxnard, CA picking up a draw against undefeated Daniel Franco earlier this year in a thrilling fight. Smith on the other hand has been featured on multiple videos pertaining to the Mayweather Boxing Gym in Las Vegas, NV on the internet and is viewed as a tough test for anyone as well as the fact that both fighters like to provide a heavy dose of inside fighting. The card will also featuring the return of featherweight John Abella (5-0-1 3 KOs) of Sacramento, CA who will be facing his toughest challenge to date as he faces Jesus Sandoval (3-3-3) of Redwood City, CA out of the Gladiators Boxing Gym. Abella will be coming off a one year hiatus since his Northern California Fight of the Year with Christian Cartier and looks to be the front runner for the award again as Sandoval is never in a bad fight and neither is Abella. The big question will come down to how will the layoff effect John Abella and how will Sandoval respond after suffering back to back losses for the first time in his career most notably, a horrific KO loss to Cesar Valenzuela to start the year in February? Also featured on the card is cruiserweight Ryan “The Rhino” Bourland of Vacaville,Ca, who is the busiest man in Northern California boxing taking his third fight in give or take 60 days. Bourland has earned two stoppage wins against two undefeated foes in Ray Mesa and Phillip Smith in the course of 30 days or so. Bourland, a knockout artist as well as a major draw in Northern California is looking to stay active and build an even bigger fan base around his crowd pleasing style. Eric Altramirano of Concord, CA will make his professional debut after years of accolades in the amateur with numerous distinctions across a ten plus year career in the amateurs facing a who’s who list of talent. Altramirano, who was featured on ThaBoxingVoice.com YouTube channel earlier this year is a product of Gary Sullenger and has been with Concord Community Youth Center for many years and looks to be a force on the professional scene. As Altramirano noted in the spring when I interviewed him, “Trophies are nice, but at this point I would like to get paid for my hardwork.” Nonito Donaire Sr. trained fighter, super featherweight Adam Fiel of Vacaville, CA will finally return back to the ring as he was set to make his return in August until a medical suspension of his opponent stopped his plans to step foot in the ring. Fiel, who has been featured on Top Rank cards in the past year is a prospect worth looking for as well as he returns to face Carlos Gonzalez. Fiel is also a knockout artist who throws leather with bad intentions with each shot. Also on the professional card will be the debut of Eric Smith. Junior middleweight Luis Cruz of Sacramento will face Cesar Renteria in his professional debut. Luis Cruz had a tough fight last year against Miguel Lopez of Oakland, CA which was ruled a draw , but many felt as though it should have gone to Lopez. This fight, after a year layoff, will show where Cruz is at in the pro game. Rounding out the professional portion will be Oscar Vasquez of Reno, NV. The location of the fight will be the Metro City Soccer, 11327 Folsom Blvd. Rancho Cordova, CA 95742 on September 27th. Doors open at 3PM,with the first fight at 4PM and the professional card starting at 6PM. Tickets are priced at $40 general admission and $50 for ringside. Abella Wins Tough Split Decision[3] By Lucas Ketelle; ThaBoxingVoice.com September 28, 2014 11:18 pm It might not of been one to draw a picture about, but when it was all said and done, John Abella (5-0-1 3KOs) stays undefeated as he bested Jesus Sandoval (3-4-3) of Redwood City, CA. In a fight that many ringside observers felt could of gone either way as Sandoval stalked Abella for the majority of the fight eating shots as he walked in range of Abella, but giving Abella hard crisp shots with his looping power. As Abella appeared to win the early onslaught of rounds, but appeared to fatigue as the fight went into the later rounds as this was Abella’s first six round fight. After the fight Abella explained that he is aiming to make 122 lbs as he felt the power of Jesus Sandoval and that he wants to go back to the lower weights. “I think I did enough to outright win the fight” Abella told ThaBoxingVoice.com after the fight. For Abella, a moderate to good draw in the Sacramento area it appears after a year’s absence, Abella accredits due to managerial issues, now is go-time for his career. At age 24 and soon to be 25 in November, Abella is still young, but with only six pro fights it appears that Abella does need to stay more active to make a mark for his claim to build up the Sacramento region. Abella is hoping to return in November with no set venue in place. Alberto Torres stops Eric Goodall Alberto Torres (5-0-2 2KOs) earned his second knockout victory as he stopped Eric Goodall (1-4) in an entertaining affair. Torres had the faster hands and superior skill, but the tall frame of Goodall created problems early on as the much shorter Torres had to dart in and out as well as get his timing right. Torres in the mid-too late rounds began to take over as Goodall slowly became the worse for wear as he was stopped late by a surging Torres. For Torres both of his knockout wins came in the Sacramento area as his hometown provides a good luck charm. Torres, who was coming off a recent draw with Daniel Franco (8-0-2 5KOs) in Oxnard, CA, this was a welcomed return to the win column as Torres appears to be campaigning for bigger and better things at the 130 lbs. division. Rhino Steals Show Ryan “Rhino” Bourland (5-0 2KOs) engaged in a hard fought battle with Eric Smith (0-1) that saw both fighters appear to stun the other as neither man stayed out of reach of the other. Bourland who in the beginning appeared to want to box quickly engaged in a fight as Smith who entered the ring in the 200 plus pound range after struggling to make the weight the day prior was all too eager to impose his size on Bourland on the ropes. The size disparity appeared to show as even when Bourland landed hard shots the effect was not as evident as in prior fights. In the end, Bourland improved with his third win in two months as the fighter from Vacaville, CA as Bourland continues to build momentum to round out 2014. Cruz battles Juarez to second career draw Luis Alfredo Cruz (0-0-2) fought nearly a year ago and picked up a draw against Miguel Lopez of Oakland, CA, in his return to the ring on Saturday he suffered a similar result against Anthony Juarez (0-4-1). In the first two rounds it appeared Cruz was on his way to his first career win as after a competitive first round that Cruz more than likely won, Cruz remerged with a dominant second round. The problem was though in trying to get a stoppage Cruz punched himself in a flurry against Juarez on the ropes at the end of the second round, something that he never recovered from. Cruz spent the last two rounds trying to get energy back , but it was all for not as Juarez worked Cruz hard to the body and at times had Cruz in rough situations that had the ref looking close. In the end, the result was fair as both fighters won two rounds although it was less than satisfying for each fighter as they both have yet to record their first professional win. Busuioc outlasts Peterson, Gaxiola earns second win in three weeks Rafael Busuioc (1-0) of Sacramento, CA defeated Percy Peterson (0-5) of Stockton, CA. Peterson, who fought above what his record indicated started strong, but ended up on the ropes and stayed content on the ropes which appears his downfall. Busuioc used shorter, crisp punches to counter Peterson’s wide punches and good leverage on the inside to get a close decision win over Peterson for his professional debut. Michael Gaxiola (2-0) of Modesto, CA improved to by besting Adrian Rodriguez (0-3-1). In a clash of two developing fighters, Gaxiola showed poise by not engaging Rodriguez when trashed talk in between rounds to get lured into a slugfest. Gaxiola who is very young at only 20 years old showed potential and heart by taking two tough fights back to back as he recorded his second win in the past month.
