Olímpico Jantony Ortiz propina nocaut en su segunda pelea como profesional

Dos de tres no está mal. Los tres hermanos Ortiz protagonizaron el sábado una cartelera de boxeo caliente, ganando 
por nocacut los hermanos Freddy y Jantony, dos púgiles de gran experiencia aficionada que muestran mucho potencial.
Sin embargo, el más grande de los tres hermanos, el junior welter Antonio “el Cacique” Ortiz, perdió su invicto en 
la mejor pelea de la noche, cayendo por decisión dividida ante el todavía invicto Giovanni Santiago.

La cartelera se presentó en el Humacao Arena en el pueblo de los Ortiz. Ambos, Jantony y Freddy dispusieron de sus 
rivales con potentes ganchos de izquierda en menos de un minuto de acción. Las víctimas fueron Edwin Rosado, un 
debutante que no pudo durarle más de 31 segundos a Jantony en un encuentro en la categoría supermosca. Jantony viene 
de debutar en el Madison Square Garden en un combate que tampoco duró mucho. El exrepresentante de Puerto Rico en 
las Olimpiadas de Londres en el 2012 se mostró muy confiado sobre su futuro después de la pelea. “Hay que esperar 
que aquí va a haber un futuro campeón mundial”, dijo Ortiz, quien pareció aceptar que está listo para rivales de más 
cuidado. Mientras tanto, Freddy, haciendo su debut en la categoría supergallo dispuso de Alex Adorno con otro gancho 
de izquierda que dejó al contrincante postrado en la lona más allá de los diez segundos reglamentarios. Freddy tuvo 
palmares de 125 ganadas con 25 perdidas como aficionado, capturando una medalla de bronce en los campeonatos mundial 
junior. Con una estatura de cinco pies y ocho pulgadas es muy espigado para la categoría. Eso y su depurado boxeo, 
adquirido en su larga categoría aficionado, merecen que se espere que este púgil vaya lejos.

Su hermano “el Cacique” perdió su invicto ante un aguerrido Santiago, que mejoró su récord a 3-0. La pelea fue “a 
palo limpio” desde el primer asalto con ambos peleadores conectando certeros golpes. Pero fue Santigo con su fuerte 
derecha y sus ganchos zurdos al hígado quien mereció la decisión. El ganador, quien terminó el encuentro con una 
cortadura en su pómulo derecho, dijo después de su batalla que “le faltó un poco de técnica”. Quizás esto sea cierto 
en este punto de su carrera, pero Santiago es un ejemplo del agresivo estilo que tienen los peleadores 
puertorriqueños. El récord de “el Cacique” es ahora 6-1.

En otra pelea, un welter, Speedy Rashidi Ellis, un púgil natural de Boston, pero que ahora reside en Bayamón, honró 
su apodo de Speedy conectando con rapidez a su rival, Reggie Canales del Residencial Lloréns Torres, despedazando 
hasta que el árbitro puso fin a las hostilidades con el peleador de Lloréns, recibiendo golpes en contra de las sogas 
sin responder con los suyos. Ellis mejoró a 7-0 con cinco KOs. Canales ya había sido sometido a un MRI en su última 
pelea, acontecida en la ciudad de Baltimore, y su entrenador anunció anoche que no volvería a pelear.

También, en una pelea entre dos veteranos, Juan Herrera y Miguel del Valle, Herrera prevaleció por decisión en una 
pelea en la categoría supermosca. Del Valle, un zurdo de 37 años, sufrió su vigesimoprimer revés ante nueve ganadas, 
y de más está decir que debe considerar el retiro.

The night was intended as a family affair for the fighting Ortiz brothers. The end result was settling for two out 
of three, as Antonio Ortiz suffered a split decision loss at the hands of Jovanni Santiago in their six-round main 
event Friday evening at Emilio Huyke Coliseum in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Ortiz began strong, perhaps motivated by 
younger brothers Jantony and Freddie Ortiz, both of whom scored quick knockouts on the undercard. The 21-year old 
super lightweight was in control early, hurting Santiago in search of his second straight knoSantiago quicky 
adjusted, controlling the action with his jab to neutralize Ortiz' attack. The strategy worked well enough to carry 
him to victory, although he was required to overcome a cut over his right eye. The two fighters provided plenty of 
thrills for the crowd, most of whom were on their feet by fight's end. Ortiz managed a 58-56 nod on one card, but 
the score was overruled by matching scores in favor of Santiago to spoil the party. Santiago improves to 3-0-1 (1KO), 
while Oritz suffers his first loss in falling to 6-1 (3KOs). 
The bout headlined on WAPA Deportes,  presented by Promociones Miguel Cotto and Top Rank. 
UNDERCARD
Rashidi Ellis remained unbeaten after scoring a third round stoppage over Regino Canales in a bout that featured a 
scary ending. Ellis - a Massachusetts-based welterweight with ties to Bayamon, Puerto Rico -  was anxious to get to 
work even before the opening bell sounded. The two fighters were talking trash during the referee's pre-fight 
instructions, but it was Ellis who backed up his words with swift boxing and well-timed counters. 
The end came with Ellis scoring and Canales (6-6, 2KOs) reacting strangely while trapped in the corner. Both the 
referee and Canales' corner recognized something was wrong as the bout was mercifully stopped. The Caguas native was 
immediately attended to by ringside medical staff, as he was laid down and strapped to a gurney before being carried 
out of the ring. Ellis, a 21-year old who celebrates one year in the pro ranks later this month, improves to 9-0 
(7KOs). Each of his past five bouts have taken place in either Puerto Rico or Dominican Republic. 
Not to be outdone by his baby brother, Jantony Ortiz flattened Edwin Rosado with the first punch he landed flush - a 
left hook straight across the chin that put Rosado down and out. The time spent observing the fallen fighter before 
halting the action was the only reason the fight lasted as long as it did - a grand total of 22 seconds. 
Still a week shy of his 20th birthday, Ortiz improves to 2-0 (2KOs). The teenaged super flyweight made his pro debut 
last month, appearing on the undercard of Miguel Cotto's historic middleweight championship knockout win over Sergio 
Martinez at Madison Square Garden. 
The WAPA Deportes-televised opener saw Freddie Ortiz (1-0, 1KO) enjoy a successful pro debut, stopping Alexis Adorno 
(0-1-1) in the 1st round of their featherweight bout. A left hook caused a delayed reaction knockdown, with Adorno 
going down and remaining on a knee for the full ten count. The official time was 0:31 of round one.
