Briggs Makes Short Work of Carmack On Lula Card Posted by Deepsouthboxing.com on November 2, 2014 at 9:55 PM From John Bryant; The Fight Connection[2] LULA, Miss. - As was pretty much expected, former world heavyweight championship contender Shannon "The Cannon" Briggs made short work of Richard Carmack Saturday (Nov. 1) in their main event at the Isle of Capri Casino. The 42-year-old Briggs won his sixth straight bout since he lost by unanimous decision to Vitali Klitschko for the WBC Heavyweight title in 2010 in Germany. Briggs, who hails from Brooklyn, N.Y. floored Kansas City, Mo.'s Carmack three times in the opening round. Carmack (12-6, 10 KOs) went down for the third and final time and was counted out at 2:59 of the first round by referee Randy Phillips. The bout was scheduled for 10 rounds. Briggs, the NABA and interim WBC Latino Heavyweight champion, improved to 57-6-1, 50 KOs. He weighed 261 pounds for the bout, while Carmock was 308 Fighting as a welterweight at 143.1 pounds, Memphian Joey Bryant knocked out Mobile's Ricky Dinkins at 1:30 of the opening round in a bout that was schedule for eight. Dins was down twice in the bout. Bryant moved to 12-0,8 KOs. The 39-year-old Dinkins has not won this century since his last victory in 1998. He fell to 10-52-4, 8 KOs. A 6-round light heavyweight scrap saw Water Valley's Codie Shuffield win a unanimous decision over winless Pomona, Calif., opponent Omar Barefield (0-8). Shuffield (4-0, 1 KO) won 60-54 on all three judges' cards. Gulfport middleweight Robert Hill snapped an 11-bout losing skid by winning a majority decision over Law Purifoy, who was making his professional debut. Hill won 39-37 on Reccia Mullins' and Bob Serios's cards, while two cards, while Gerald Deming had it a draw at 38-38. Monroe, La., super middleweight Chris Doyle captured a split decision victory over Sardis veteran William "Pete" Johnson in a 4-rounder. Deming and Serio had Doyle (1-2) winning 39-37, while Mullins had Johnson (10-39-2, 3 KOs) winning 39-37. The loss was Johnson's eighth straight. The card was promoted by Summit Fighting Promotions.
