Hanshaw Jr. switches up strategy[1]

Tom Hanshaw Jr. was gunning for the knockout from the get-go.
That’s usual practice for the 28-year-old local boxer, but his all-out strategy wasn’t panning out as planned on 
Saturday night. “I got a little tired chasing him for a knockout with the head, so I took it to the body,” he said.
Once “The Hillbilly” began landing solid hits to Daniel Craycraft’s side, it spelled the beginning of the end for 
the opponent. Hanshaw Jr. was one of several locals to fare well in Double Impact 3, a boxing/mixed martial arts 
hybrid event held at Boyd County Middle School. The Appalachian Boxing Association light heavyweight champion won 
by technical knockout 2 minutes, 45 seconds into the third round.
While Hanshaw Jr. already owned his belt, local MMA fighter J.P. Felty had Frank Young in the way of his.
No problem for Felty. He beat Young with a triangle choke 2:10 into the match. “He was trying to keep his distance,” 
Felty said. “Once I got hold of him ... he just kinda folded. Those body shots were really taking their toll.”
Felty earned the regional welterweight championship belt. Hanshaw Jr. calls Felty “the hardest working guy in the 
gym.” “I try to be,” Felty laughed. “That’s the only way I’m going to stay halfway in shape.”
Felty and Hanshaw Jr. both plan to participate in Double Impact 4, which is tentatively set for Aug. 5.
South Point’s Bobby Brown beat Wade Strait in a unanimous decision after three rounds. Brown connected on a string 
of uppercuts and knees to the gut of Strait to gain the edge.
Travis Hanshaw TKO’d Brian Kerr just 1:07 into the second round of the boxing bout. Hanshaw, now 10-1 since turning 
pro, fought as a middleweight. He took an altered approach against Kerr, a 6-foot-3 cagefighter. “Travis is starting 
to look more like me!” said Hanshaw Jr. of Travis’s aggressive style on Saturday. “He just wanted to please his town.”
Kerr was a late addition after several fighters accepted then declined invitations into the ring with Hanshaw.
Brad Wiler, of Grayson, had success in the exhibition MMA match. The referee had to stop the fight in the second round.
Other fight results included: Anthony Springsteen over Josh Brock (MMA); Lenroy Thomas over Jason Pauley (boxing); and 
Jack Asquini over Ryan Smith (MMA).
East Coast Promotions, with Tom Hanshaw and Brian Knipp as main organizers, once again orchestrated the event. 
Callihan’s American Pub & Grill served as the main sponsor. Knipp said approximately 370 people were in attendance on 
Saturday. According to Knipp, East Coast is setting an attainable goal of more locals on the card come August. Even 
Knipp himself is planning to step into the cage. “Now, that should bring some people out,” he joked.
Knipp and Hanshaw plan to open a boxing/MMA gym on Roberts Drive behind Timeless Tans tanning salon this summer.
