Mendoza-Fuentes Full Report[3]
Report and photos by Felipe Leon; FightNews January 12th, 2015
The Tijuana, Mexico, boxing season got off with a bang last night at the city’s Municipal Auditorium
with a marathon-like twenty bout fight card witnessed by a near capacity house. Despite originally
announced as a card that would feature a world title defense, a junior title and a female world title,
none of the championship fights came into fruition. Despite of that, about three thousand boxing
hungry fight fans gave their newly crowned IBF junior flyweight champion Javier “Cobra” Mendoza
(23-2-1, 19KO) a hero’s welcome as he quickly dispatched of over matched Mauricio Fuentes (17-4, 11KO)
in the ten round main event. The night was broadcast live on the Azteca channel in Mexico and beIN
Sports in the U.S.
After a two-year exile from the sport, “Cobra” Mendoza came back last September to capture the vacant
IBF strap in an impressive performance against former world champion Ramon Garcia. Fuentes no stranger
to the world stage having challenged for the same world title Mendoza now holds back in May of last
year when Johnriel Casimero in the Philippines stopped him. Fuentes was stopped in one by Casimero
and thus the title went vacant.
Mendoza wasted no time as he began to score hard punches to the body and head of Fuentes from his
southpaw stance. A hard straight left to the body made Fuentes take notice coupled with hard over hand
punches to the head. Fuentes never was able to muster much of an offense since Mendoza was right on
top of him from the opening bell. A right hook half-way through the second hurt Fuentes, now with a
swollen left eye, and sent him down to the canvas. Fuentes beat the count but only to be met with a
barrage of “Cobra” Punches including a right uppercut that sent him to the canvas again. As Fuentes
tried to beat the count, his corner man jumped into the ring forcing referee Christian Curiel to stop
the fight. Time was 2:18 of the second.
Now Mendoza must face his mandatory challenger in Milan Melindo in his next fight.
“Indio” Ortega knocks out Esquivel
Touted as the next big thing out of Tijuana, Edivaldo “Indio” Ortega (20-0-1, 11KO) is making a case
for it as he stopped his best opponent yet on paper in Christian “Español” Esquivel (27-6, 20KO) in
the third round of a scheduled super bantamweight ten.
Esquivel had the upper hand in experience coming into the fight having faced the much better opposition
although at a lower weight class being a natural 118 pounder. Esquivel owns wins over Tshifihiwa Munyai
for the WBC silver bantamweight belt and future Leo Santa Cruz opponent Jesus Ruiz. Ortega had not
faced anybody of note.
After a slow first round where Esquivel scored the better shots, the southpaw Ortega came on a bit
stronger in the second scoring with a nice flurry punctuated with a left hook. A right hurt Esquivel
early in the third and Ortega saw his change forcing him against the ropes. Once there he went to work
with a series of hard punches and finishing off with a right uppercut as Esquivel went down. Esquivel
was not able to beat the count administered by referee Christian Curiel. Time was 1:36.
Robles Dominates Soto
In the sole female fight of the night, Tijuana’s Sandra “Perla Negra” Robles (9-1, 3KO) survived an
early knockdown to dominate tough Linda “Muñeca” Soto (6-5, 3KO) in the second half of the ten round
junior flyweight fight to earn a wide unanimous decision by scores of 97-94, 96-93 and 98-91. Fightnews
saw it 97-92. Soto scored first with a solid right hand that resulted in a flash knockdown of the lefty
Robles whose left fist barely touched the canvas. Robles shook it off and went to work with her high-
pressure style concentrating on the body of her opponent. Soto moved well on the outside after giving
up the two previous rounds scored enough flush right hands to take the fourth. That would prove to be
the last decisive round for the fighter from Puerto Peñasco, Mexico. Robles gathered steam as the
rounds went by and kept pressuring her opponent slightly more than the last one scoring hooks to the
body and straight lefts to the face that would snap Soto’s head back. Soto still found spots to score
her straight right but those spots came less and less as the fight wore on. Robles went for the
knockout in the last couple of rounds but Soto proved to be resilient enough with good movement and an
occasional right hand to keep Robles at bay to survive until the final bell.
Other Results:
Former straw weight champion Mario “Dragoncito” Rodriguez (19-9-4, 12KO) of Guasave, Sinaloa, punished
Mexico City’s Armando Torres (21-14, 15KO) with a constant body attack to earn the TKO win in the fifth
round of a scheduled light flyweight ten. Official time was 1:58.
Tijuana welterweight Abner “Jaegger” Lopez (21-4, 19KO) did quick work of Colombian Jose David Mosquera
(16-5-1, 14KO) stopping him at the 2:25 mark of the second round of a scheduled eight. A right uppercut
hurt Mosquera that was followed by left hook to the body and finally another hook to the head.
Undefeated featherweight Elvis Torres (10-0, 7KO) forced Carlos “Chocolate” Avila (1-7), both of Tijuana,
to not come out of the fifth round of six.
Ensenada, MX’s Rafael “Furioso” Guzman (15-0, 9KO) struggled but remained undefeated going six tough
rounds against veteran Pedro “Pitbull” Lopez (4-9, 1KO) of Tijuana in the welterweight division. Guzman
won all the rounds but none of them were easy. Scores were 60-54 three times for Guzman.
Teenage Tijuana welterweight Jaime Munguia (9-0, 6KO) looked impressive as he took a unanimous decision
over the game Alan Zavala (3-2, 2KO), also of Tijuana, in a six rounder. Scores were 59-55 twice and
58-56.
In a rematch, Hector “Rapidito” Flores (8-0-2, 4KO) was finally able to impose his will on Efrain
Gonzalez (2-9-1), both of Tijuana, dropping him with a barrage of punches in the fourth round. Gonzalez
was not able to beat the count. Official time was 1:58 for the scheduled flyweight six. They had fought
to a draw in previous bout.
Wild Eduardo Galindo (10-0-1, 7KO) of Tijuana survived an early knockdown in the first to earn a six
round unanimous decision over previously undefeated Gregorio Perez (5-1, 4KO) of Guasave, Mexico.
Galindo came on strong in the second half of the fight with Perez boxing from the outside. Scores were
60-54 and 59-55 twice. Fightnews had it a much closer 57-56 for Galindo.
In a shocker, former Tijuana amateur star Jorge De Alba (13-2-1, 10KO), trained by former world champ
Raul “Jibaro” Perez, was unceremoniously knocked out at 1:32 of the first round of a scheduled six in
the super bantamweight division by unheralded Alem Robles (7-6-2, 2KO) of Los Mochis, Mexico. A straight
right hand hut the southpaw De Alba and seconds later with his back against the ropes a series of
punches ending with an overhand right hand to the temple sent him crashing down to the canvas. De Alba
beat the count but was on wobbly legs forcing referee Juan Manuel Rincon to stop the fight.
Tijuana’s Daniel “Piernas” Ahumada (2-7) also pulled a slight upset by defeating Tlalnepantla, Mexico’s
Antonio Tlatelpa (1-1, 1KO) via a four round unanimous decision. Scores were 39-37 three times.
Rigoberto Hermosillo (3-0-1, 2KO) of Guadalajara, Jalisco, didn’t even a break sweat in scoring a left
hook to the liver that doubled over Hector Aguilar (0-5) of Tijuana stopping him on his tracks twenty-
three seconds into the first round of featherweight four.
Ismael “Chino” Camacho (3-0, 2KO) remained undefeated with a second TKO of Jose Hernandez (0-7), both
of Tijuana. Time was 2:12.
Super flyweight Ricardo “Hindu” Espinoza (1-0, 1KO) looked cool, calm and collected in his pro debut
along with stopping fellow first timer Angel Cruz. (0-1), both of Tijuana. A hard body shot was the
fatal blow. Time was :28 of the third of a scheduled four.
Acapulco, Mexico’s Marcos Randel Mendoza (3-1, 3KO) was surprised with the constant pressure from Pedro
Palma (4-12, 2KO) succumbing to a unanimous decision in a flyweight four rounder. Scores were 40-35
twice and 38-37. Randel Mendoza was down in the first.
Jose Quirino Jr (7-2-1, 2KO) scored a unanimous decision over Julio “Sexy Boy” Robles (3-5-1) in a super
bantamweight four rounder. Scores were 40-36 and 39-37 twice.
Bantamweight Victor “Chaky” Sandoval (8-1, 7KO) of Tijuana did quick work of Jesus Sandoval (0-5), no
relation, scoring a second round TKO in a scheduled four rounder. Time was :47.
Busy Rafael “Big Bang” Rivera (17-0-2, 12KO) forced Jacob Perez (0-1) to no come out of the third round
of four in the super featherweight division.
