This was the first in a long series of weekly boxing cards promoted by Bert Welling at the Orpheum Theatre (later Orpheum Theater). These cards were suspended during the summer of 1934, then resumed that September. The Orpheum presented burlesque shows as the regular fare at the theater. On boxing night, a ring was put on the stage at the end of the burlesque show, and the bouts proceeded. There was no separate charge to watch the boxing bouts after the burlesque show. Welling also presented "professional wrestling" one night a week, for a time, at the Orpheum.
