Comments

  • Paez was aggressive, stepping in with single power shots that landed cleanly.
  • Ortiz spent most of the fight moving, stopping occasionally to throw a combination, although he lacked power on his punches.
  • Paez lost a point in round five after a vicious low blow put Ortiz down for two and a half minutes.
  • In round seven, referee Marty Salmon put his hands on both fighters to separate a clinch - just as Ortiz let go a left hook on the unsuspecting Paez. Paez was sent to the canvas, and got to his feet just after Salmon reached the ten count.
  • Ringside audio caught Salmon telling ringside officials, "That's what (Paez) gets for clowning around," as well as Salmon inferring that he was planning to stop the fight earlier in Paez' favor due to the accumulated punishment Ortiz was taking.
  • Initially announced as a knockout win for Ortiz, the commission decided that the punch landed by Ortiz was inadvertent, and the correct call would have been to decide the outcome of the fight by going to the scorecards. Paez was ahead on the scorecards and was declared winner of the bout by a split decision.
