"Charley Joseph, New Orleans, squeezed past Spider Webb, Chicago, by a scant margin before 6,614 fans last night. Joseph looked like anything but a 4-1 underdog as he went to work on Webb's midsection in the 1st round, but Webb took command in the next three stanzas with a two-handed attack to the head. After a somewhat mild 5th, Joseph switched to a right hand lead and sent Webb spinning to the canvas with two rights on the button. Joseph took the lead in the 7th and 8th and the two split honors in the last two frames." -Associated Press
- Unofficial AP scorecard - 6-4 Joseph
- Judges Fred Adams and Ernest Cojoe both scored the bout 4-4-2 but gave it to Joseph on cleaner punches.
- Gate - $19,105
Post fight comment
- "Look, on a close fight I expect to lose to the hometown boy, but I thought we won this easily. Webb's fought better fights, but I thought we had a big edge." -Hec Knowles, Webb's manager.
