"Middleweight contender Spider Webb interrupted Franz Szuzina's attack Wednesday night with a barrage of smashing head blows that suddenly battered the rugged German into helplessness for a TKO in the 7th round of their TV fight. Szuzina was battering substitute Webb of Chicago about the MSG ring in the 7th round when Webb suddenly landed a smashing left-right combination to the chin that buckled Franz' knees. Then Webb poured the smashing leather into Franz' reddened face until he slithered along the ropes helplessly and almost went down. Webb hit him with 11 shots to the head before referee Harry Kessler stopped it at 1:20 of the 7th round. Before that, Webb - favored at 3-1 - and Franz had fought on nearly even terms." -United Press International

  • Webb accepted this bout on short notice when Szuzina's original opponent, Gene Fullmer, withdrew from injury.
