"Middleweight contender Spider Webb, 158 1/2, of Chicago, the 6th ranking aspirant, wound up with a unanimous decision in MSG over Willie Vaughan, 160 1/2, the California state champion, in a scheduled 10-rounder. Although Vaughan, of Los Angeles, was the underdog, he forced the fighting in every round and provided menacing opposition. Willie, trying to force Spider to close quarters, had his knees buckled in the 1st round by a right to the chin and was rubber-legged twice in the 4th session. Webb, on the other hand, was in real trouble in the 7th when a barrage had him half-groggy. There were no knockdowns." -United Press
- Unofficial AP (the UP did not announce a card) scorecard - 7-3 Webb
- Webb had fought Jackie LaBua in Louisville only 16 days prior.
Post-fight comments
- "I thought I should have gotten it. I thought Spider was trying to steal rounds in the last 30 seconds. But I will say Webb is about the best I ever fought." -Willie Vaughan
- "They always seem to come up for me. Just like they come up for Notre Dame. I wanted to box him more but he kept coming in all the time. He was hard to hit with a right." -Spider Webb
- "We'll take on Joey Giardello, Gene Fullmer, Charles Humez or anybody to get in there. All we are looking for is a chance at the title." -Hector Knowles, Webb's manager
