This may be the Joseph A. (Spud) Murphy reported in the June 5, 1927 Spokane Spokesman Review (Spokane, WA, USA). That article published a photograph of him in a baseball umpire's uniform. He was then the Master Bridge Engineer for the state of Idaho--in charge of constructing a bridge at Newport over the Pend Oreille River. He had seen service in four major operations as a sergeant with the 23rd Engineers in World War I; attended college at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of Colorado; organized the American Legion in Idaho; and was instrumental in getting Idaho to permit 20-round bouts (the only state in the Union to so permit, as of 1927).
