"Unranked Willie 'The Worm' Monroe scord a 7th round TKO last night over veteran Stanley 'Kitten' Hayward to qualify for a bout with 2nd ranked middleweight Bennie Briscoe. Monroe scored with left jabs and combinations, cutting Hayward's right cheek in the 2nd round and later opening a cut over his eye. Referee Pete Tomasco stopped the fight when the 6th round ended after Dr. Alfred Ayella advised Hayward that "you can't fight with one eye." -United Press International

• Although Promoter Russell Peltz had promised the winner a bout with Bennie Briscoe, it was actually Hayward who fought Briscoe a year later.
