Sugar Ramos 126 lbs beat Danny Valdez 125 lbs by TKO at 1:15 in round 7 of 10

  • Date: 1962-05-11
  • Location: Olympic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, USA
  • "Sugar Ramos, 126, Cuban featherweight, knocked out Danny Valdez, 124 3/4, in the 7th round at the Olympic Auditorium Friday night before an estimated crowd of 6,000. As a result of the victory, Ramos clinched a title shot against champion Davey Moore at the Olympic later this year. Valdez, a game and willing youngster, was outclassed in all but one round, the 6th, which Danny captured by a slim margin. Ramos, who contented himself with jabbing and hooking all through the fight, apparently decided to end things in the 7th. He came out punching with both hands and dropped Danny with a left-right combination to the head early in the round. Valdez took a nine-count and was apparently hurt when he resumed action. A few seconds later, Ramos again dropped him with a right to the jaw and Valdez' manager Art Arvizu promptly threw in the towel at 1:15 of the round. For the most part it was an uninteresting fight until the last round when Ramos decided to open up." -Long Beach Press-Telegram

    • Despite the article stating a title shot was clinched for Ramos at the Olympic Auditorium later in the year, it was not until March of '63 he would receive said title opportunity. But it was held under the banner of the Olympic Boxing Club.
