Larry Holmes defended the WBC heavyweight title against Ossie Ocasio and Earnie Shavers fought Ken Norton in a prime-time doubleheader on Friday, March 23, Leonard battled Gonzalez on Saturday afternoon and Wilfred Benitez defended the WBC welterweight title against Harold Weston on Sunday afternoon.
• Leonard dropped Gonzalez with a right to the chin at 1:15 of the first round. After Gonzalez struggled to his feet, Leonard backed him into his own corner and floored him with a right and a left. Gonzalez was able to get back to his feet, but his corner stopped the fight.
