  • Referee: Battling Ferdie

"Ray (Sugar) Robinson, welterweight champ, knocked out Vern Lester of San Francisco in the fifth round of their scheduled ten round non-title bout at the Coliseum here today....The knockout was the second of the fight. Referee (Battling) Ferdie was kayoed when he tried to separate Lester from Robinson after the bell ending the third round. Lester nailed the referee with a left hook and Ferdie was floored for 30 seconds. Robinson, who displayed masterful boxing before 4,000 fans, appeared to be annoyed at Lester for fighting after the bell ended three of the four rounds. At the start of the fifth, Robinson leaped from his corner, smashed a vicious left hook and then connected with a right cross and Lester was counted out by Ferdie. The end came at 12 seconds." - Associated Press
