He fought from middleweight to heavyweight, but was most successful in the light heavyweight division. He represented Poland at the Olympic Games in Helsinki (1952), where he reached the quarterfinals, losing to Norvel Lee , the Olympic champion (1952) awarded the Val Barker Cup .
He took part in the European Championships three times . In Warsaw 1953, he won the European vice-championship. In his other two starts ( Milan 1951 and West Berlin 1955 ) he was eliminated in the quarterfinals.
He won the Polish champion title eight times: in the light heavyweight division in 1951 , 1952 , 1953 , 1954 , 1955 , 1956 and 1957 and in the heavyweight division in 1959 . In 1949 he was a bronze medalist in the middleweight division, and in 1950 he was a silver medalist in the light heavyweight division.
He represented the Polish national team 26 times, achieving 18 victories, 1 draw and 7 defeats.
He fought 385 fights, winning 324, drawing 12 and losing 49.
He started learning boxing in 1946 at the Bielarnia Kalisz club , then fought for CWKS Warszawa and Prosny Kalisz until his career ended in 1962.
In 1953, he was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit for his services and achievements in the field of physical culture and sports.
The International Boxing Tournament Tadeusz Grzelak has been held in Kalisz since 1996.
