The Griffin rematch seems to have been a chance for Griffin to redeem his previous TKO loss to Jeffries and qualify to challenge for Jeffries title. Jeffries had stated he would not defend against a black challenger though he had fought several black contenders coming up, so it's unclear if he would have really given Griffin a title opportunity.
