Talk:Floyd Patterson vs. Jerry Quarry (1st meeting)
This fight looked like a generous draw to both camps. Quarry owned the first four rounds, starting fast and catching Patterson for two knockdowns. Floyd came back to box his ears off, winning the last three rounds by good margin. The 5th looked like a draw round to me, while Floyd also appearred to win the 6th. So the key was the seventh round, in which a Quarry slip was ruled a knockdown. Quarry was completely unhurt and appeared to come back and win the round. But the slip/knockdown negated it for him. This call was essentially the fight, in my opinion. Patterson was critical of Quarry, saying that Jerry loafed in the ring. He was probably right at this point. Quarry had this fight won and gave half of it back, setting up their rematch. These guys were basically cruiserweights in modern terms.
