The rematch of two fairly equal fighters at this point. Patterson , somewhat over the hill. Quarry, still not yet developed. Critics state a more dedicated Quarry should have won both fights by clear margins. Patterson could not hurt him and Quarry could drop Floyd almost at will. Patterson was the better boxer, but Jerry showed he could box too at this stage. Patterson went down in 2nd and 4th rounds. Patterson started faster and won Rd. 1 . The difference in this fight was Quarry's ability to lure Floyd in and counterpunch. Jerry would wait near the ropes and Patterson never failed to come in and get popped. Howard Cosell called the fight for ABC, and also appearred confused until he understood Quarry's tactics. The California scoring system used was much maligned by Cosell, but is an effective system. A tie round is 0-0 . An edge round is 1-0 in favor of the better fighter. Both Quarry and Patterson were credited with some 2-0 rounds in these two matches. Quarry was better and deserved the win.
