This was a comment stated in his obituary. While the actual war ended in May of 1945, what most people don't realize is that our troops remained in Europe for a longer time under the occupation & rebuilding phases. The military personnel who were there during that time are considered, by the military, to have served during this war - thus giving him veteran status. Then there's also the possibility that he "fudged" his age so he could serve. This is known to have happened, just like it used to in boxing. - Tony Triem
