Talk:Johnny McCarthy
Johnny McCarthy was known as "The Fighting Motorman," "The Fighting Bricklayer," and as "The Fighting Harp." He told people that he was born with gloves on and just couldn't quit. Johnny McCarthy was not only a motorman in San Francisco, but also owned and operated a Shell gas station in San Francisco's Noe Valley. Johnny fought the first main event at San Francisco's Civic Audotorium, where his picture now hangs among other San Francisco boxers. He considered his brother, Tommy McCarthy, to be the better fighter. Johnny's fighting changed after Tommy's death because he never wanted to kill a man in the ring. He ended his career in the ring because of his blindness in his left eye. He was advised that if he continued fighting, he would lose his sight completely. Johnny went on to manage a few local fighters, but focused his energy on his business.
