Ted Wright 159 lbs beat Phil Moyer 153 lbs by UD in round 10 of 10

"Welterweight contender Teddy Wright's stronger finish gave him a unanimous 10-round decision Saturday night over Phil Moyer, a substitute middleweight, in their televised fight at MSG. Wright of Detroit swarmed over the heavier Moyer of Portland, Ore., in the 9th and 10th rounds of their bout to wrap up the decision. Moyer turned in an unexpectedly good performance for a man fighting his second bout in eight days. Phil tried to beat Wright with rough tactics but he ran out of gas in the late going. Moyer, weighing 159 1/4 to Wright's 153 1/2, tried to make the most of that weight advantage, however, referee Teddy Martin warned Phil three times for bulling and butting. There were no knockdowns in this bout where Moyer was unable to break the New York jinx that has impeded his career. It was his 4th New York fight and his 4th New York defeat." -United Press International

  • Moyer accepted this bout the previous Wednesday when his brother Denny Moyer had to withdraw due to an ear infection.
