"Despite bad cuts over both eyes, former world middleweight champion Terry Downes, 162, of London, got back on the winning trail at the Empire Pool here last night when he decisioned Don Fullmer, 161, of West Jordan, Utah, over 10 grueling rounds. The former champion attacked throughout the fight. In the first half Fullmer was equal to the task, but in the second half he began to wilt under the pressure of Downes attack and was forced to clinch repeatedly, drawing two warnings from referee Bill Jones in the 8th round. In the final session Fullmer tried to punch it out but was only driven around the ring and was glad to clinch at the end of the round. It was a hard fight but there were no knockdowns." -United Press International

  • Downes' original opponent this night was Sugar Boy Nando of the Dutch West Indies, who dropped out. The offer then went to Dave Horsman of Minnesota, who also dropped out. Fullmer was a substantially higher ranked fighter than either Nando or Horsman, so when he accepted the fight, Downes demanded and received an additional $4,200 in purse money.
