Paul (The Ultimate) Vaden and Terrible Terry Norris, both of San Diego, were said to have an intense dislike for each other, which lent edgy anticipation to their junior middleweight fight. Except that Vaden (24-1, 12 knockouts) proved to be the ultimate no-show. Content to rest on the ropes, loath to counterpunch, he simply absorbed Norris's punches, the spectators' disgust and the Pennsylvania boxing commission's enmity.

Norris (41-6, 25 knockouts) won a unanimous decision to claim both the International Boxing Federation and World Boxing Council junior middleweight crowns. George Bochetto, the Philadelphia boxing commissioner, said that Vaden's $250,000 purse would be withheld for "conduct unbecoming a champion," which presumably meant a lack of effort.
