"Thad Spencer, who had been beaten twice by Amos Lincoln, got his revenge the third time around by bombing out the 'Big Train' at 2:09 of the 8th round last night at the Cow Palace. Despite an eight-month layoff, Spencer, 202, gave Lincoln, 210 1/2, a sound beating in almost every round. One Spencer right just before the end of the 3rd round sent Lincoln wobbling across the ring. Three big rights in a row exploded on Amos in the 8th. He staggered back into the ropes, completely defenseless but determined not to go down. Referee Tony Bosnich stepped in and gave him a nine-count, but that short breather failed to save him. Another right knocked him back into the ropes and Bosnich quickly halted the fight." -Oakland Tribune
- This win secured Spencer his August 5th bout in the Houston Astrodome with Ernie Terrell in the 8-man elimination tournament to find a successor to Muhammad Ali.
- Both judges Frankie Carter and Jack Silver favored Spencer 8-0 after 7 rounds.
- Unofficial Oakland Tribune scorecard through 7 completed rounds - 8-0 Spencer
Post-fight comments
- "He may be tall, but after three rounds he'll be down to about five feet because of the body punches I'm going to hit him with." -Thad Spencer, on his upcoming bout in the tournament with Ernie Terrell.
- "Listen, I got a $47,000 home and a couple of cars to pay off. So he got lucky and won one. I'm not a quitter. I just need a lot of work." -Amos Lincoln, when asked if he would retire.
