- Date: 1966-02-21

- Referee: Bob Mitchell 2-3
- Judge: Vern Bybee 4-2
- Judge: Jack Silva 4-2
"An eye cut and a little-known State Athletic Commission rule brought bedlam to Kezar Pavilion last night. Thad Spencer suffered the cut but received a technical victory when his bout with Billy Daniels was terminated after six rounds. Referee Bob Mitchell ruled that Spencer's cut was caused by an accidental butt early in the 6th round, and since Thad was ahead on points at the time the decision was his. Daniels, a long-armed battler, threw many of his punches from right field, but in the 4th a whistling left hook caught Thad solidly and planted him with a thud on the seat of his trunks. Spencer quickly bounced back up for the mandatory eight count and was flurrying at the end of the round. In the 6th he shook Daniels with a left hook and Billy seemed to be tiring." -Oakland Tribune
- Unofficial Tribune card (after six completed rounds) - 3-3 Even
- The fans in Kezar pelted the ring with debris when the decision was announced, exasperated by the fact that the ring announcer first announced Daniels the victor.
Post fight comments
- "He had a little cut already, but the butt really opened it up. I called Dr. Don Lastratto over at the end of the round and he advised me to stop it. But if the fight had continued into the 7th and Spencer was forced to quit because of the cut Daniels would have been awarded the decision. The rule only applies to the round in which the butt occurred." -Referee Bob Mitchell
- "I'm a Negro and don't have an influential white manager. But if I had I wouldn't have lost. The worst I would have gotten would have been a draw." -Billy Daniels
- "This is terrible. We saw the punch that opened up the eye. Our word is as good as the referee's." -Whitey Bimstein, Daniels' trainer
- "I told the referee from the 4th round on that Daniels was butting me. Every time he threw a punch he'd move in and butt. I felt the decision was justified. I was making the fight." -Thad Spencer
