  • This bout was part of the World Boxing Association's eight-man elimination tournament for the vacant Heavyweight Championship, which was stripped from Muhammad Ali after he refused to be inducted into the U.S. Army in April 1967.
  • The other first-round bouts of the tournament were Jimmy Ellis vs. Leotis Martin (which was on the same card as Terrell vs. Spencer), Oscar Bonavena vs. Karl Mildenberger and Jerry Quarry vs. Floyd Patterson.
