Thad Spencer 195 lbs beat Roger Rischer 199 lbs by UD in round 12 of 12

"Thad Spencer took Roger Rischer's California state heavyweight title last night in a dull 12-rounder at San Francisco's Civic Auditorium. Roger, a 2-1 favorite, rarely mounted a sustained offensive, and he spent so much time leaning against the ropes to slip punches that the seat of his red trunks became black. His tactics had the crowd jeering, but for the most part kept him out of danger. He did, however, take solid body punishment from Spencer and in the 12th round was nearly knocked out. Thad clobbered him with a left hook in that stanza and Rischer, on rubbery legs, stumbled into the ropes. He didn't go down, but referee Tony Bosnich jumped in and ruled it a knockdown anyway. So, the mandatory eight-count gave Rischer the rest he needed to finish the fight." -Oakland Tribune

Post-fight comments

  • "The referee stole my KO. I thought he was going to stop it, but instead he started counting and that saved Rischer. I could have hit him with a couple of more punches and put him out." -Thad Spencer
  • "I wasn't as sharp as I should have been. It usually takes me about three round to get going, but I couldn't seem to get started at all tonight. I hope to fight again within the next month and then after a couple of fights I'd like to get a rematch." -Roger Rischer
