Hearns won the first four rounds on all three scorecards, then Weston rallied to win the next two. However, Weston's left eye was badly swollen and he was having trouble seeing out of his right eye, which he said was thumbed in the fourth round. The fight was stopped after the sixth. Weston was diagnosed with a detached retina in his right eye and never fought again.

- "I'm sure the thumb in my eye was unintentional, but I couldn't see anything. When he started moving to my left, I couldn't see him out of my right eye. There's no telling what would have happened if the fight had gone on. I was coming on strong in the 5th and 6th rounds, and I saw Hearns starting to slowly fade away. I still maintain he's got a lot to learn about boxing." -Harold Weston
