Thomas Robinson lost to Paul Johnson by TKO in round 4 of 10

  • Date: 1895-05-27
  • Location: Monumental Amphitheatre, Baltimore, Maryland, USA
  • Wind-Up at Monumental.

The Monumental Amphitheatre closed its season of sparring last night. Thomas Robinson and Paul Johnson, both colored, started to spar ten rounds. They showed that they were not fighting in the first three rounds, and Manager Fred. A. Stewart told them to do better. Early in the fourth round Johnson reached Robinson above the eye. Robinson jumped out of the ring and would not return.

To give those present the benefit of an exhibition John Ball donned the gloves and for three rounds showed how easy it was for him to hit Henry Mason, colored.

Manager Fred A. Stewart started boxing bouts at the Monumental on December 12, 1894, and has held them every week night since, having conducted nearly 200 such contests. He also organized the State pool tournament, winning first place himself, and through a bowling tournament established the championship in that line.

The boxing has resulted in the bringing out of a number of men and the rating of the abilities of most of the locals, some of whom have shown themselves near the top notch of their classes.

Mr. Stewart will manage the athletic shows at Kernan's Theatre, in Washington, during the summer, opening tonight with a match between Joe Gans and Howard Wilson.
