According to an item in April 23, 1918 edition of the Sun (Sydney, NSW) on the Trove website, Alexander "Tibby" Watson was drowned at Pyrmont early in the afternoon (April 23, 1918). While working as an ice carter, he went aboard a ship to deliver some ice. As he was about to leave the ship, a derrick broke and struck Watson in the head, rendering him insensible. Then he fell overboard and sunk before anybody could assist him. When the news item was written, his body had not been recovered.

According to an article about Tibby Watson's death and career by W. F. Corbett in the May 1, 1918 edition of the Referee (Sydney, NSW), Watson's body was recovered four or five hours after the accident. He was "exactly 5ft high and weighed 7.10 (108 pounds) while battling at his best." Watson "was in 37th year" at the time of his demise.
